| St-Rémy is a large Provençal village with a well-conserved rich
history. You will discover its past thanks to the numerous traces through the
lake and edifice in the old town. Let's walk through the heart of the village
and revel in its history.
Le Planet. In the old days, the only "place" in st-Rémy also called
"place aux herbes", because the regional producers and fermers used to
come here to sell their products until 1849. One can admire the hotel "
Mistral de Mondragon" also wrongly known as : "Le palais de la reine
Jeanne", queen Jeanne's palace"
La Rue Carnot. The most commercialised street of St-Rémy, it rons right through the
heart of the town. There where numerous merchants and artisans, creating an
animated atmosphere. It is in this road that you will find the Nostradamus fountain, inaugurated in
1814, as well as Ambroise Liotard's famous sculpture .
La Place Jules Pélissier. The administrative heart of St-Rémy de Provence, the square hosts the
town hall. A typical village square, with ancient majestic trees and its dolphin
fountain, inaugurated in 1814 and dedicated to Louis XVIII.
La
rue Hoche. Left over from the street of the city walls, this road has held onto it's
history. One hight see reminders of the old wall and the attempted restorations.
Michel de Nostredame aka "NOSTRADAMUS" was born here the 14th december
1503.
La Rue Daniel Millau. A large israelian community occuped St-Rémy during the middle ages,
particularly in the street "Millaud" at the time also called
as"La juterie".The large provençal council, held in 1500,
chased the israelians from St-Rémy and they found refuge only from the
pape in Avignon and the "Comtat Venaissin.
La Rue du Parage. This road surely ows it's name to an old dyer. It's one of the streets offering
the most of the old town. Noble families lived here. The street opens out on to
the hotel "Sade", a national archeological museum from the antic
city of "Glanum".
La Rue Lafayette. Othernise known as "Rue St-Martin", this road starts at
the west of the town. The street was a very important interior artery of
St-Rémy, serving both oil mills of the town. Marie Girard was born here
the 15th august 1872, wife of the poet Joachim Gasquet and queen of the
"FELIBRIGE"to1892 from 1899.
Le Quartier Sainte-Anne. The poorer farmers, known as "LI TERRAIOUN" used to live in this
street ; With few pocessions, they used to raise silk-worms in their homes.
Their silk was greatly sought after at the Beaucaire market until the middle of
the 19th century.
