     villages Alpilles : Mouriès

History
The history of Mouries joins the past of les Baux de Provence to which it belong until the revolution. Situated on the Aurelienne road, Mouries, during the first century become the roman station under the name of TERRICIAE. Then, due to different Moorish invasions that devastated the Provence, the name of Mouries would take its roots in the word MORERIOE, ( Les Maures).

The prosperity of the area was favoured by the draining of the swamps and by bringing water from the durance river which allowed ovine rearing, culture of wine and olive growing.

Mouries is the first district for olives in France due to the number of trees. Two olive mill are still used today, the modern one and the one belonging to the cooperative.

In Mouries, remain many traces of the rich and tumultuous past of the village. Oppidum des caisses de servanes ; Castles and old farms as such as : Servanes, Beauregard, Malacercis Viguery and Brau which façade has been listed in 1932 ; Ancient church from the 18 th century at the cimetery ; Church St-Jacques ; St-Symphorien chapel ; Protestant temple ; Oratories ...

The inhabitants of Mouries, passionate peoples, are fiercely attached to their traditions, which we can recall during the events of the village : Votive parties, green olives parties ...The arena of Mouries is very popular in the region and the "toros" race always are a priviledge to better appreciate the people and the warm atmosphere of the area
