| History
At the crossroads of Saint-Remy
and Tarascon , and of Arles and Avignon, the commune of Saint Etienne du
Grès extends on approximately
30 km2, half on the part of North-West of Alpilles, half on the plain of
Crau. Two territories with very different landscapes.
The soil soft inclined
at the foot of Alpilles, mixes soil of erosion and stones torn off. This
type of soil is named " Le Grès " in Provencal.
These soils always produce olives and wine of higher
quality.
In the plain,
fruits and vegetables have made their appearance since many
decades. This village of 2 100
inhabitants has preserved its traditions,
festivals and others feasts all along the year.
- Fiesta Grésouillaise the 2nd weekend of June.
- The festival of the
"Saint Eloi", 2nd weekend of August.
- The festival of
"Colleta", the 2nd weekend of September.
An important market of fruits and vegetables producers
intended for the professionals takes place several time per week, in the
afternoon.
Many excursions are possible
at the beginning of Saint-Etienne du Grès, partly on the GR6.
" La cabane du garde" at
the beginning of the village, is a particularly pleasant and
interesting ballad, you will pass near superbs toros in the Heart
of Alpilles.
