Eyguieres is an old city, twice millenial, its first inhabitants belong to
Ligurien or Salien's nation.
Its name come from the swamps surrounding it and
most of all from three springs :
The springs of Bormes, of Gilouse and of Font
vieille. It is a verdant area due to the natural spring water, but also to the
canal of Craponne (1560 ), of the Garrigues and of the Congres (1786 ).
To
remind such a privilege the village of Eyguieres receveid a blazon which device
was : "L'aigo fai veni pouli" (water makes you beautiful ), or in a
more prosaic way : Sobriety is the mother of beauty.
From the 11th century on, the population united around the fortified building,
under the protection of the first local Lords. In the north part of the village,
the castle of Roquemartine, built in the 12th century.
Destroyed during the 14th
century, had a very limited growth. to the contrary, expansion took place around
the castrum de Aquaria, built on a dominant rock..
Eyguieres is a country town of
the district since the french revolution.
