| History In the heart of the Alpilles, gate of the Camargue and of the valley of Les
Baux, you will find the village of Aureille, surrounded by olive-groves. The
ruin of its castle, from the 12th century, watch upon the serenity of its
inhabitants. Situated on the foothills, south side of the Alpilles, open gate on
the plain of La Crau and of the Mediterranean sea, on the horizon.
The castle, now a ruin, use to belong to citizens of Arles.Aureille and its area
were part of the very powerful republic of Arles. In the 15th century, the comte
de Provence and Raymond de Turenne, fought for the property of it. In the 16th
century, the castle sheltered a garrison and some opponents of Henry the 4th.
Ruined and deserted by those battles, only in the 17th century will the village
be lived again, reaching a slow demographic progression.
AureilleThrought all times, Aureille was able to keep its identity and its
traditions. Here, conviviality and family life are not vain. The feelings of
unity and solidarity are dear to the people of the "Pays".
The bullfighting tradition is part of life and many parties are organised all
trought the year. Abrivados, Camarguaises races, donkey races ... All very good
reasons to be together for an "apéro" and to share privileged
joyful moments.
But Aureille also is a warm and welcoming place. It lays inbeded, surrounded by
magic hills and varied landscapes. Climbing, walks in nature and horse back
riding, an authentic little world where hikers enjoy to stop. This little corner
of paradise has so much to tell.
